“Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God.” – William Carey

From the lives of Christian heroes like William Carey, we find inspiring stories of the courage and faith of men and women who have profoundly shaped history by answering the call of the Gospel. How did these heroes end up being that way?  What made them tick? What shaped them? Through their faith journeys we can glean rich lessons about Christian life that are relevant for each of us today. This Winter break is a great opportunity to read a biography of one of these heroes of faith, and we’re going to do this together!

Here is a list of recommended reading. There are so many heroes of faith throughout history–which one are you going to read?

Shadow of the Almighty by Elisabeth Elliot (Jim Elliot)
Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret (Hudson Taylor)
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom (Corrie Ten Boom)
Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther (Martin Luther)
Living Faith (Helen Roseveare)
Keith Green – No Compromise (Keith Green)
Born Again (Charles Colson)
Eric Liddell
George Mueller
John Wesley
William Carey
Amy Carmichael

I read Pure Gold last month, and I would highly recommend it. It’s the biography of Eric Liddell (watched Chariots of Fire? He’s the main guy). Fastest man on earth who gave up future Olympic gold medals to serve as a missionary in China. And that’s only the first third of the book!

This month I’m going to read The Hiding Place!

I finished “Gladys Alyward: The Little Woman”. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down! I finished it in one day because her life and the different ways she experienced God answering her prayers and leading her through difficult times is so amazing that I had to keep reading. The amazing thing is that despite all the hardships she remained a person of joy that others could not help but want to know more about God and become Christian. This book is a must read!!

I’m going to read The Hiding Place! starting today. =)

  • Catarina Bang

I listened to the audiobook of “The Hiding Place” at work, and it was so amazing! But I ended up ignoring my co-worker for a good 2 days, so I would recommend just good old-fashioned reading =]

  • Kevin Situ

People that display “real” joy in times of hardship are inspiring. During my hardships…I just display “fake” joy and I get tired at the end of the day.

It is pretty sad that I don’t know how to properly express my true emotions…

  • Linda Kim

did you start reading yet? :)

  • Joel Letro

Hudson Taylor’s faith in God is so challenging. What a man of prayer he had to be such that he had to wait patiently and persevere. God answered his prayers in the most amazing of ways every time. I’ve read about a third of the book so far and it’s a page turner.

I just finished reading The Hiding Place yesterday. There were so many “wow” moments throughout the book, but the one thing that really made me pause was Betsie’s (Corrie’s sister) attitude through it all. Even though she was dying inside the concentration camp, she really wanted to share the gospel and God’s love not only to fellow prisoners, but also to their guards. She would not allow herself to give into hate, bitterness, or despair, but she continued to have hope, and continued to love others.

Anyways, lest I say any more (and give a full book report), I also highly recommend this book.
