TFN: Last Bible Study of Fall 2008

Hey everyone!

Kung Fu Panda

Mike and Steve just can't get enough of TC dancing

It’s incredible how fast this semester has flown by, isn’t it? Sadly, this past Friday’s Bible Study was the last one of the semester that we’ll have as a2fBlue. Next Friday’s Bible Study will be Berkeley  college-wide (with a2f Gold, Koinonia, and Kairos) so make sure to make it to that if you’re around!

On Friday, after enjoying some good fellowship upstairs at the Y, we listened to Pastor Will’s message on John 6. He asked us to examine our hearts for the real reason we choose to be a Christian, to be a part of a2f, etc. He also discussed the claims of Jesus and the fact that we cannot ignore Jesus’ claim to be a personal God.

Freshman + Senior Brothers 4-3-2-1

The freshman brothers make a pyramid at Union Square

After Bible Study, we split up my classes for activities! The freshman went out to Union Square to take pictures. The sophomores went to a yogurt place in SF (I forgot what it was called), and then headed over to Union Square for pictures also. The seniors went over to Will and Esther’s place and took Myers-Briggs personality tests. All in all, I think everyone had an awesome time on Friday night. I’m so thankful for all the new relationships we’ve been able to build in this past semester, starting from getting to know the freshman, to just bonding within classes also. I’m excited for what the spring will bring for a2fBlue!

TFN: Mark 5; TC Practice 2

Hey everyone!

Kung Fu Master?

Stephen Chee (Soph.) practicing for the Kung Fu Panda dance

Here’s a quick update on what happened last Friday. a2f Blue held Bible Study at the Tilden Room in MLK Student Union, a room on the Berkeley that many of us had never been to. Thankfully, not too many people got lost. We started off the night with free dinner for all! After dinner, we got together by class to have a time of fellowship, sharing about each other’s weeks. The sophomore/junior brothers ended up sharing about how we deal with fear (but somehow through that question, we all ended up talking about near-death experiences, which was interesting).

Seniors and Freshmen dancing to their NKOTB song

For the message, we had a special speaker: Pastor Ed! He gave the message about the sick woman from Mark 5. The point that stuck with me personally was that just like the the sick woman “suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors,” we suffer in our daily lives because we fall for the world’s claims of what can actually fulfill and deliver us.

After the message, we had our second Thanksgiving Celebration practice! I’m excited to see how the dances look after we’re finished practicing (it’s already looking good though!). Make sure you practice the songs and dance for this coming Friday’s final practice!

GONE to Sierra Lodge Trip

Hello again everyone! The pun in the title was TOTALLY intended :]

Group Picture (Normal)

a2f Blue at Sierra Lodge

This weekend was quite special for a2f Blue. Instead of having our normal TFN, acts2fellowship co-hosted GONE with Koinonia Berkeley and Kairos Fellowship on Thursday night. At GONE, many of us had a chance to catch up with some people who we haven’t seen since NSWN and to also meet new people. I think many of us could genuinely relate with the message on how time is precious (because we have a limited amount of it) and that we shouldn’t be wasting our lives. Instead, as Pastor Ed challenged us, let’s think about the big questions of life.

Hanging around the campfire

On Friday night, a2f Blue members found themselves not in a classroom on campus listening to an awesome message by Pastor Will, but in minivans, driving up to Sierra Lodge for our Fall Semester getaway. Freshmen and others visiting Sierra Lodge for the first time were able to experience, relish, and appreciate the hard work of Gracepoint members that went into building the beautiful retreat site that is Sierra Lodge. On the first night, we cooked marshmallows, shared stories, and sang songs around a nice, toasty bonfire. It actually took like 15 different brothers to get the fire started, the task proving to be much more difficult because of the damp firewood.

Sisters doing DT on Psalm 73

Hubert and Billy on a random rock above the water. I'm not sure how they got there.

On Saturday morning, after enjoying a delicious breakfast, we all did our DTs in Psalm 73 together and then split up into groups to discuss what we had thought about or had learned. Personally, I really enjoyed this time of sharing where I was able to hear from freshmen and seniors who I normally don’t get to do my DT with. After this time, we headed over to Sardine Lake for some hiking! Unfortunately, because of weather conditions, we had to make a slight change in plans, but I think we all enjoyed the unique experience of eating sandwiches under the protection of minivan trunk doors. During our short hike, we were lucky enough to spot two bald eagles soaring above the waters; also, I think one of the most memorable moments from our trip was when the staff all came out and had a pseudo-dance competition (Remember? “Vamos a la Playa,” “Beautiful,” and “In the Beginning”). As the weather became less hiking-friendly, we rushed back to the vans and headed back for Sierra Lodge.

For dinner that night, we had carnitas tacos (mm, my favorite) and spicy noodles. Then we played two games as a group: the “blanket name game” and the “three-word game.” For those who don’t know what those are, join us next time to find out :] After these games, we watched Apollo 13. I think we can learn a lesson or two from the bravery, leadership, and teamwork that all the people involved with Apollo 13 displayed. Afterward, we all headed off to sleep, every one of us a little sad that the fun-filled weekend would soon be coming to an end.

Freshmen Brothers at Sardine Lake

In order to get to Berkeley in time for Sunday Service, we got up bright and early on Sunday morning, ate a quick breakfast, and mobilized as a huge group to help clean Sierra Lodge. Everyone grabbed different cleaning supplies and put in their part to help keep our precious Sierra Lodge clean and ready for the next group that will go up to use it. All in all, this weekend was a great, de-stressing experience. I also got to know the freshmen a lot better, so I’m really happy about that. Thank you to all the staff who spent hours on end planning this trip, preparing the food, driving, and just making sure everyone had a great time!

This coming Friday (November 14th) we’ll be resuming our normal TFNs. This week’s will be at 7:45PM at the Tilden Room at MLK Union. Also, if you want to see more of our staff doing outrageous(ly funny) dances, check out our Thanksgiving Celebration on the 23rd of November. Check acts2fellowship.org for more information!

Freshman Sisters celebrate Mandy's Birthday

Friday, 10/31, was a really busy and fun-filled night for a2f Blue.  Before the message by Pastor Will, we all had a delicious chicken dinner. It’s exciting to see the freshmen and other newcomers really becoming a part of our community. Right afterward, we had an interesting icebreaker involving eggs, chickens, dinosaurs, royalty, and rock/paper/scissors. Not very intuitive, but REALLY fun! The message was on John 6 and the “Feeding of the Five Thousand.” Pastor Will discussed many points, including examining Jesus’ actions to get a glimpse of what God is like (i.e. God is compassionate seen through Jesus’ compassion for people) and others detailing what we can learn about being a Christian from Jesus (i.e. all of Jesus’ followers are disciples, testing is an opportunity God gives for our faith to grow). After the message, we split up into two groups to have our first practice for Thanksgiving Celebration! The sophomores and the seniors (the half who joined them) gave it all while trying to absorb the fast-paced, martial arts inspired, choreography for their theme “Kung Fu Panda.” The freshmen and the seniors (the other half) embraced that they’re the “New Kids on the Block” (err, at least the freshmen did), and showed that their dancing abilities are not to be underestimated. It’s going to be interesting to see how the dances end up in the end as we learn the whole routine. I’m excited already :]

Sisters with the increasingly popular "Asian family portrait." They're getting really good at it

After TC practice, the seniors headed off to their senior discipleship retreat while the underclassmen brothers and sisters headed over to Jackson Lao’s house and Eunice Lee’s house (respectively) to have a BBQ/Band of Brothers Night and Sleepover(respectively). The brothers were treated to late night snacks of chips, soda, hot dogs (chicken apple and hot links!), ice cream, cake, and brownies! Of course, I have to mention we watched the first two episodes of Band of Brothers; I think watching the courageous deeds and selfless, patriotic mindsets of the soldiers of Easy Company put all the brothers to shame. The sisters had an equally great time playing various games, eating, and enjoying the opportunity get to know one another.

Remember, that this week’s Bible Study is the special event, Gone, on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church. Also a2f Blue has a Yosemite getaway this coming weekend! Good bye until then!
